Carbon Footprint of Our Products

At Nike, material innovations—such as recycled polyester, Flyknit, Flyleather, and Nike Air—are changing the world of sustainable performance and reducing the average product carbon footprint of our products.

 

In FY19, the average carbon footprint of NIKE footwear and apparel products was 7.33 kg CO2e/unit.

 

To track the environmental impact of products at the company-level, we look at the average carbon footprint of a unit of product and track this through our Material Sustainability Index (MSI), Apparel Sustainability Index (ASI), and our Footwear Sustainability Index (FSI). These indices provide an environmental profile of each product.

This transparency allows us to make better choices in designing, product creation and planning.

 

For example, shoes made with Flyknit create 60% less scrap waste than a typical shoe upper and, to date, we’ve scaled the Flyknit platform across all categories and generated over $2 billion in revenue. As we scale, we rely on the innovation of our vendors in the value chain. NIKE’s Flyknit supplier, Unifi, continues to invest in new technologies and materials that allow us to produce product that is low waste and contains a high percentage of recycled content (90% on average).
